The war file is published on maven.

Run the server

RosaeNLG Java Server is packaged in an executable war file. You can:

  • run it in a plain Java Servlet server like Tomcat - see their documentation

  • run it directly using embedded server with java: java -jar java-server-VERSION.war

By default, templates are not saved permanently: the server is empty when it starts, you can upload templates and render them, but they are lost when the server is shut down.

To save templates, you must provide a path to the disk. Templates will be saved when uploaded (as json files), and reloaded when the server restarts. You can also push new templates directly on the disk (using CI or whatever) and ask the server to reload them, without having to restart the server.

To set the templates path:

  • Use the environment variable rosaenlg.homedir to set the path. For instance use java -Drosaenlg.homedir="C:/some_folder" -jar target/java-server-VERSION.war when using the embedded server.

  • Alternatively, you can also set the environment variable ROSAENLG_HOMEDIR.

The server is provided without any security so you should only use it in a microservice architecture, and never make it publicly visible.

Docker version

A docker version (distroless, OpenJDK based) is available on docker hub and called rosaenlg/server-java:

  • to run with a path for templates, use ROSAENLG_HOMEDIR environment variable, and map that folder using -v

  • Java Heap Space can be an issue, raise it

Some commands:

  • download: docker pull rosaenlg/server-java:latest

  • run without saving templates on the disk: docker run -p 8080:8080 -e "JAVA_TOOL_OPTIONS=-Xmx2048m" rosaenlg/server-java:latest

Packaging the templates

RosaeNLG templates are typically developed on a node.js environment, as RosaeNLG is primarly a JavaScript library. Once the templates are developed, you can package them in a JSON package (instead of having multiple .pug files, which is not practical), deploy them on RosaeNLG Java Server and render texts.

To package the templates, use the RosaeNLG Packager.

Misc

Do not use the Pug cache parameter, as:

  • anyway the render function of Pug is not used, so it is useless

  • the server already caches the compiled functions

Performance

On a sophisticated project, to render 1 text:

  • Node.js version: 10 ms

  • Java version: 80 ms
